Found this cinnabar lacquer box at the Oberlin GW for a couple of dollars. It measures 5 5/8 " x 3 5/8" . There are a few chips to the sides and damage to one of the figures on top unfortunately. I really don't think it's that old and the mark on the bottom is stamped into some type of tin metal plaque. It's a six character variant of a Da Qing Qianglong Nian Zhi mark, probably 60's or 70's. 20th century for sure. Real or not I still think it's pretty cool. -Mike-

Thanks Karen :)...so you think it's real "imitation" Cinnabar ?? I think I read somewhere that the real thing is poisonous and can no longer be exported so they use built up lacquer instead.

      I wouldn't know :-/
I guess it depends on it's age...I looked up a bit about cinnabar only a few weeks ago so my knowledge is very very limited!
