    Lisa-light…
    (30 items)

The first image is of a Vaseline opalescent shade pattern, Opaline Brocade by the John Walsh Walsh company of England made in 1897 ish? The second image is the same shade shown with a similar 2 and 1/4 inch fitter shade to illustrate the size of the first shade. The third shade is again opalescent Vaseline patterned. I have not yet found the pattern name and am not aware of the maker. It has a 3 & 1/4 inch fitter. The fourth shades is straw opal with heavy stripe. I wonder if this fourth shade was made by Phoenix. Again though, am always interested in hearing your opionions. If you have any questions or need more pics, do let me know. They were all purchased in Canada. I look forward to hearing from you.
    Sincerely,
    Lisa
P.S I did shoot them wth UV light because someone was disappointed when one of my last posts showed a cranberry salt with Vaseline rigaree and berry pontil without the use of UV. So I wanted to oblige this time.

Super shades Lisa. It think you're pretty spot on with the Walsh attribution. I'm not sure about the others, I mainly see the English shades by Walsh & Powell.

It's interesting that you clearly love light fittings & shades. I started collecting them when I was 18 and I can't tell you how many time men comment on a women buying light fittings & hard wear.

I don't find them as often now as I used to but I have a great collection. You'd love mine in the same way I love yours.

PS, do you know much about American arts & crafts light makers? I have a set of American hanging lanterns and I've never been able to identify the mark.

Ahh Lisa, I see you specialise in vintage light fittings & shades. I don't know how I missed you! You'll have my rummaging through my collection (currently on a book shelf & the attic) in no time.

      Dear Jewels,
Thank you for your thoughts on the Opaline Brocade. I gather you didn't recognize the pattern on the third shade. The one with the 3 & 1/4 fitter. The last one I think is Phoenix but I am not sure. Love to see your shades and fixtures. Anytime you feel so inclined to post them. ;o) I love lighting both gas and early electric but Gas is really my favourite.
Most of the bigger lighting people here and in America are men but one of the best is a lady called Bogart. She has been doing lighting for a long time and has a great reputation and stock that would make you drool. One of the nicest people is the Gas wizard in California. He has a wonderful selection of images on Flicker that he shares with everyone. You might enjoy looking through his images. He really is a wizard. Some of his restorations are beyond imagining. He had a piece that had been run over by a fork lift truck if you can believe it and when he was finished it was gorgeous. If I remember correctly it had lovely big heron on it, before, beaks gone, wings broken....... After the piece of amazing art it was when it was made. Oh to be able to be that good at anything! He really is wizard by name and wizard by nature. ;o)

      Hi Lisa

Thanks for the info, I'll have to check out the sites you suggest and have a sticky-beak.

My thing is Arts & Crafts, as part of that I (& my hubby) collect (when I can find & afford them) light fittings, shades, metalware and hard ware.

So I have a neat collection of WAS Bendson fittings and powell shades, I also love vaseline shades/glass in all shapes and varieties. I did post some of my shade & fittings a while ago so I'll dig out my photos and repost them for you.

My preference is for the Arts & Crafts handmade style of fitting, but I also fancy a bit of nouveau, jugendstil and ascetic movement if it comes my way.

I'm sorry, I don't recognise the 3rd shade. I don't think I've seen that design before. I'm also not sure about the 2nd shade, the photo is quite little but the frill seems to be a bit stiffer than I'd expect to see on a walsh or powell shade.

If you don't know it already, check out Mike Weedon's site. He's quite good with his attributions of english vaseline shades and glass in general

Hi Lisa, I'm procrastinating so I've found some shots of some of my fittings & shades which I'll post for you now.
