I obtained this great Lehigh Valley Railroad dining car celery dish at a recent house sale. It features the Asa Packer pattern and is in great shape.
I was in the check out line at the house sale, and the spied this dish holding candy for the sale's patrons! I asked about it, and the cashier sold it to me for a great price. Yikes, these sales hold some gems!
The first image is a frontside view of this dish, which is in almost perfect condition. And the second image is a closeup of the Asa Packer pattern. Asa Packer was one of the founders of The Lehigh Valley. He was also one of the founders of Lehigh University of Bethlehem, PA. Lehigh U still adheres to strict performance standards for its students.
The next two images depict the reverse of this dish.

Silly question - I have seen lots of things called a celery dish, and I want to know who (and how) imbibed so much celery they needed a proper dish for it?

There's no such thing as a silly question. I could not find an answer re: the naming of a "celery dish" :( My only guess is that back when the dish first originated, people ate more fresh fruits and vegetables, including celery.
I feel this way, because looking at the data, it seems that people were a lot lighter in weight than we contemporary souls :) Just a guess, maybe another viewer can add something to this.

Although it is not a railroad item, I have an old Victorian Era Crystal celery dish. That type of piece has been around a long time.
