Picture One is the obverse (heads side) of the type one gold dollar dated 1853-O The little "O" at the bottom below the wreath of pic two indicates the coin was minted at the New Orleans mint. (pic one and pic two are the same coin) Pic three is the reverse (tails side) of the "1st year of issue" gold dollar, again a "Type One" which has the same obverse (heads) as the coin in pic one. And since there is "no mint-mark" at the bottom of the coin in pic three, that indicates the coin was minted at the Philadelphia mint. In 1854 the obverse (heads) was changed to an "Indian Princess" head rather than the liberty head pictured in pic one. This new "heads side" on the gold dollar remained throughout the minting of all gold dollars from 1854 through 1889. There was a slight change in the size of the Indian princess head from the coins struck in 1854-1856 from the coins featuring the same head from the latter part of 1856 til the end of the series in 1889. The difference in the size of the princess head between the type two and the type three gold dollar is slight, and can't be recognized easily unless one was a knowledgeable collector of this type coinage. The coin in pic four is the obverse (heads) of a "Type Three" gold dollar minted in 1862 showing the beautiful Indian Princess head. But seeing as how only 4 pics are allowed, this is all I am able to show. But above you can see exactly how each of the three types of gold dollars look that were struck by our govt in the mid-1800's. This one's for you Toyman.

Yes and for the first year 1853 they did a coin like hub with liberty lady on rock and shield. They also did silver after trying to change over then they were making coins a little smaller too.I would love to talk with you more bahamaboy.I see you know the history too. What is best way for me to talk with you?

In the comment section of my 1st post (bajo ekulele) my email address is there. If you email me, please put Toyman from C.W. in the subject box so your email doesn't get trashed accidentally. As far as me knowing my history, that's debatable. I do have some knowledge on coins in general and especially gold coins. Coin collecting, and all that has to do with them, is a subject I have studied closely for over 25 years and is a daily, sometimes hourly affair.

Just wanted to take the time to Thank you for the great complement you paid me on offcialfuel's post earlier. And also say that your comments and support are great apprecited. With that said, I'll also add that your collection of FINE jewelery and silver is very impressive. Are you sure you're not one of those modern-day pirates, lol, just kidding. Thanks Kerry for those kind words bro. I am just in awe with all the treasures all you guys have. I mean I thought I collected everything but looking at your watches and vehicles and officialfuel's numerous gas pumps and signs and there's Toyman and StihlCollector and senor_trunk, AJ8Jason, Vintagemad (and I know I'm leaving out at least a dozen others who I admire) and on and on and on... I mean there is just a great bunch of folks with some "kick ass" collections of stuff I don't own, but really want to own. Thanks again for taking the time to look at some of the junk I've collected down through the years and thanks a lot for taking the time to comment. Have a great weekend my friend.
