Belt drinking cups were either made of wood or horn. This example is made of wood....not sure what kind, butternut is a wild guess. A lot of times these are confused with honing stone holders. The lack of significant wear inside the cup, and the smooth round opening makes me think it is, in fact, a drinking cup and not a stone holder.

I love the decoration around the rim....connected x's all the way around. Very hand carved and primitive. This came from a dealer in Paradise, PA, near Lancaster. There is an example in the George C. Neumann book dated 1750-1820. I would think these are tough to date. Enjoy!

It would be hard to date but I love the rustic style to it. It may be a simple pattern but I find at times that's better then over the top. Well done
