    TheGateKee…
    (222 items)

Recent EBay acquisition of 5" tall x 10.5" long Salesman Sample Gate in the original box. I've not found any patent information on this item. All the provenance I have is that it came from a family in the Detroit, Michigan area.

Inside the box is a message that states that in case the model was left at a customer location that it should be shipped to The Security Gate Company. It appears that a label was removed that possibly revealed the location of the company. I'm hoping someone will recognize this gate and fill me in on the missing information.

It appears the model was used to demonstrate the unique gate system which includes a secure latch mechanism and a unique lifting device that operated on a camshaft. Notches to hold the gate in the open position are seen on the upper portion of the cam. The lifting device raised the gate to clear obstructions in its path. The latch mechanism allowed the gate to open and close from either direction. The intricate pattern of the wire in the gate adds to its appeal.

They spelled it wrong in the Farm Implements magazine. (or the spelling has changed over time) to Lapeer, MI. Not La Pere.

      A. A. Jones was a salesman on his way to LaPeer from Cass City, then on to KY in 1913 for the Security Gate Company of LaPeer!

      6/18/1909:

      M. A. McVicar, sales agent of the
Security Gate Co. at Lapeer, was in
town on business Thursday and placed
the agency of the Security Gate with
      Strifl%r & McDermott. Mr. McVicar
says that the company is rushed with
orders and the force of ten men at the
factory cannot turn them out fas~
enough. Within 30 days the company
plans to increase t0 the manufacturing
      force to 25 men.

E.A. Jones was going on another trip. He must have been #1 salesman!

Looks like they were a new corporation in MIchigan in Nov. 1906 with a capital investment of $23,000? (I only read the OCR text. I hate paying to see newspapers.

I was wondering -- Do they use those metal planks still down there, that were just in the ground? They kinda were consider a gate ( in a sense too ) as cattle would not cross over them.......Cattle guards I think they were called

      Antique rose,
Yes, cattle guards are still used extensively in cattle country. I've seen faux cattle guards on highways that are lines painted on the pavement. These seem to work as well. They are a gate that doesn't have to be opened and closed.

Oh - I was saying I bet it was E.A. Jones who carried it! He seems to be their #1 salesman!
