Found in yard of old Bayou Teche house, Cajun country SW Louisiana, where all military men were remembered as being in the army. Assume it to be a sweetheart medal given to a female family member, but don't know. Can't find any info on it. Where did the soldiers buy these things? Stateside before they left? Were salesmen out in the field in Europe/the Pacific? Did the girls buy them themselves at home?... and if so, where? Stores? Mail order?

Looks to be a WW2 era US Navy sweetheart jewelry pin.
They were sold in stateside military post exchanges and also by local jewelry dealers. Usually service members would purchase it for a loved one, but it is entirely possible it was purchased direct by the loved one.
If you search online for "ww2 sweetheart jewely" you will find numerous examples-- ebay will give you the typical selling prices. It wouldn't take long to find this exact style piece available.

No problem-- I collect sweetheart jewelry (among many other items). It is a great item to collect as there is a seemingly endless supply of variety.

An archaeologist never knows what she's gonna find. I specialize in Acadian studies and Colonial Louisiana studies, and recognize some things that others might not, but WWII pins... nope. What fueled my curiosity is that the family was so sure that none of their military men had been navy. Time to focus on the daughters now, rather than the sons.
