I have been trying to find out some information about my ladies spittoon and have not been able to find another like it. After extensive online research, I have found only minimal information about the back stamp. the back stamp is a circle with the words Carlsbad Austria and inside that are the initials A.K. I found that A.K is the initials of the man who owned an import company in the U.S. from 1880 to 1884 at which time he sold the company. This spittoon was imported from the Carlsbad Austria area between 1880 and 1884. When the company was sold they continued to use the same back stamp but added Co. to it. I would like to find out more information about it and if anyone has seen a spittoon like this one.

      "A. KLINGENBERG BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Anton Klingenberg was a native of Germany and a resident of New York since 1850. A. Klingenberg was an importer and wholesaler of art pottery, Bohemian glassware, French and Carlsbad china, located at No. 35 and 37 Park Place, New York City, New York. In 1888 the business was considered one of the largest establishments of elegant ware in the china and glassware trade in the metropolis and well respected in the industry throughout the country. The business was first established in 1852 by Mr. Kittel and Anton Klingenberg and after some changes in the business, Klingenberg became the sole proprietor in 1881.

The buildings located at Park Place were expansive and housed and displayed a constant impressive inventory of heavy and valuable goods brought from nearly every prominent establishment in the world. Among the elaborately decorated goods were breakfast, dinner and tea sets, toilet sets, fine cut glass, vases, ornamental pieces in Bohemian and Austrian glass and the latest novelties from European manufacturers. Also, there were special sets for oysters, soup, fish, game, entree, fruit, etc.; artistic pottery in plaques, trays, etc., for weddings and holiday gifts, along with Parian, majolica and fancy ware of every description.

      A. Klingenberg imported goods from Limoges, France; Germany; Bohemia and other European manufacturing places, as well as, imported plaques, vases and object d' art from the most famous masters. The business trade, was entirely wholesale and extended throughout the United States and Canada.
