Vermont, despite its small size, has more well-preserved early train depots (the small town kind) than most other states. They're usually used as restaurants, or offices, or as departure points for tourist excursions.

But if you want to see a railroad depot as it was, in mint condition, circa 1890 or so, get on down (up?) to the amazing Shelburne Museum just outside of Burlington VT.

You can find more details on the museums website, but this compound consists of two buildings plus a shed for a steam locomotive plus a really nice pullman type car.

I'll be posting more shots of the truly amazing interior of the main depot building in the next couple of days, but for now as a teaser here are the outside shots. Note that these are only two of the twenty or so buildings on the museum's campus. If you are into antiques or history or if you live anywhere near Vermont, this museum is a must-see.

Part of my summer 2010 East Coast antiques whirlwind tour.
