Hi Mike she is made of composition and they did not always hold up well with paint lifting and cracking . She dates around-40s by her eyes , The molds on these dolls bodies were often not smooth and mold seams show that is normal . I would think under her Mohair wig or on middle of back you might see raised letters by maker although many were unmarked . The face on yours is in good condition and her eyes are clear earlier compo dolls had eyes that crystalized making them look blank. You can pull up a bit on wig if you dampen your finger and just get it a tad damp it will lift easy although glue maybe so dried out it will lift easy.
A composition doll is a doll made partially or wholly out of composition, a composite material composed of sawdust, glue, and other materials . Then dipped several times in paint and dried .
Manikin Thanks so much for the Information. You should see this other doll I got with this one from the auction, Cloth Body, her face is cracked around the mouth and raised letters on her head are A. Horsman. will be posting her shortly. Thanks again.
Here is a similar one and you can see the cracks and also fine lines in face . Yours in much better condition
