I found this little chair at an antiques mall, in Austin TX. I'm no expert researcher and google yields no results at all for the name "Sely", so if anyone could point me to any info about this maker and what state it may have come from, I would be much obliged. I just love it and would love to have more info on it.

There is no SELY chair company. HOWEVER, if you research S. ELY you will be quite pleased. NOTE the period after the S. The chair was actually made by Smith Ely but his stamp was S.Ely and was always under the seat on the back side. Usually they sell for a couple hundred right on up to you name it.

Well that explains it, haha! Thank you very much for pointing that out!

I think you will be pleased. Just don't alter it if you intend ever selling it. To a collector who has five and wants six makes you top dog.

Thank you, I plan on leaving it as is, for sure. It's just perfectly rough and aged, how I like it, but I certainly didn't realize it's quite that old. Now that I know, I can see the 1830's style in the painted stenciling. Thanks again for heads up! I'm already learning new things here :)
