1983 Special Edition Perthshire Paperweight, 3 7/8" diameter - limited to 20 made. The information below is copied from The Western Colorado Publishing Company
Perthshire Extra-Magnum Special Edition from 1983 - LIMITED EDITION OF 20. If you line up the most amazing Perthshire weights ever made, this one is at or near the beginning of the lineup – really amazing. You do not see many glass makers even attempt such a difficult project. When Saint Louis made their encased gingham weights in 1989 they had to destroy 19 out of every 20 (Dunlop, The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights). The process is difficult and complicated. First of all is the lovely and complex lampwork, with five different colored flowers and a bud over green leaves, which is beautifully executed. Once the lampwork was assembled and encased in molten glass and cooled it was then dipped into white glass, cooled, and dipped into red glass, cooled and finished, and then very artfully cut into the striking gingham pattern. They could have stopped there but instead dunked the whole piece again into the pot of molten glass, shaped it, let it cool, and finished it with an elegant and perfect cutting. In the best ever Perthshire book by the Mahoneys and McClanahans, it is noted that this weight was either unsigned or signed with a “P” cane in the base. This one is neither – it is engraved on the base “PP” for Perthshire Paperweights. 3 7/8 inch diameter; 2 1/2 inches tall; two pounds and three ounces
