Tuesdays I head off for a trawl at my favourite oppie and this week found these two small bowls made by Rosenthal. This oppie always has European porcelain rather than English ... more my taste anyway.
These two bear the range number 4083 designed by Hans Theo Baumann. The dating system at Rosenthal is rather complicated. You have to look at the label and look for symbols in and around the brand name. This one is really hard to see but there is a little mark under the R in Rosenthal : 1964.
At first glance I thought ..... Not a real pair! But Studio Linie !!!!
But when I got home I had a better look at them. I was reminded of the Pop posters of Victor Vasarely that used circles and squares in a different manner.
The design of the porcelain is interesting in itself: slip cast, stackable and with a beautiful glaze in two tones.
Hans Theo Baumann added a complicated printed design over the sides of the bowls. Very Sixties !!!
Baumann is Swiss born (1924) who "served an apprenticeship as a textile technician before studying from 1943 to 1946 at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Dresden and subsequently studying graphic design and interior decoration at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel.
In 1955 Hans Theo Baumann opened a studio. By 1954 Hans Theo Baumann was freelancing for Rosenthal, a collaboration that would continue on into the 1970s."

Hans Theo also worked in Glass for Gral-Glashütte (Dürnau) and there are fine examples of his glass here on CW.
