It's a screw jack for raising old barn or house foundations.
Yes its a lifting device, much like a car jack.
This is an old bottle jack or screw jack, mainly used for lifting houses like when re-stumping etc.
Certainly a screw jack. Now if you find one made of wood you have a true treasure. Wooden ones were made to lift wagons and carts for repairs, wheel changes, axle packing etc. The base and screw were pretty much the same but the top was kind of cone shaped with the tip aimed upward to fit in a hole. Finding a wooden one is like looking for the needle in a hay stack.
Actually, it is a "jack stand" used to hold things up after it has been jacked up.
I would not agree with you blunder. I have jacked up three story houses with these type jacks. These will raise a building and WILL NOT reverse and back down. They were great for replacing sills before power jacks came along.
A jack stand is a totally different animal.
Maybe St. Maarten is a little more advanced. We us hydraulics to lift & these as safety stands now. LOL!!
