Purchased this old window at a second hand store today, it is 40 by 18 inches, including the frame. I don't know anything about stained glass windows so looking for tips on what I should do to clean this up. On one side the frame is painted black the other white. All of the painted surfaces are chipping, based on the age thinking it may have lead paint on it so want to get the paint off or prevent it from chipping more. I was thinking I should scrap the paint off and repaint or coat the wood. The glazing is missing in a lot of places so that needs to be replaced.

I'm not sure if repainting and glazing negatively impacts the value of the window. I know some people prefer to leave items in as found condition, I'm usually of the mind to refinish. Any recommendations are appreciated.

I love the colors and design in the window, looking forward to finding a place in my home to display it.

KathyKay I would remove the frame if possible and fix the glass first. Replace any cracked glass, resolder the came if needed and then reblack all of the came and solder. The strip the frame and attach it around the glass, window putty the edges etc.
      it's a lovely light!

replacing broken glass is a major ordeal ! you nearly have to take whole window apart and we solder it back together , You can't just pull one piece out rom my experience . I would stabilize the glass and make sure wood will hold it in place . Very nice !

Thanks for the input. I've never worked on a stained glass window before. I'm more into refinishing trunks and furniture. Making repairs on this is totally a different skill set, sure I would do more harm than good. I plan on removing the chipped paint and will make sure the frame is solid. At first inspection not seeing any cracked pieces of glass, currently the layer of dirt on it could be making them unnoticeable.
