    I found this piece over the weekend. Totally strange, but it was the only primitiveI piece in the whole store. I identified it correctly as a spide...but I didn't know more about it until later.

    A nearly identical piece is in the book ,"Antique American Furnishings." by George C. Neumann. The Americans made all iron spiders. However, the one pictured above was made by Europeans before coming to American or after they arrive. This is basically just a ladle with legs screwed on.

      great piece. I've learned something from you again, ...brass spiders are from Europe.

      Yes, at least that is how I understand it. Either from Europe or made by first generation European settlers.

      I just scored two iron spiders from a great collection I've been buying from. These will be American....I hope. I will post them when they arrive.
