I have had this very early padlock for years and am enjoying researching the history. It is still fully functional and has the original key and intricate handmade markings. It is 29 cm in length and from research so far appears to be of Viking or Roman origin. It is a fascinating and beautiful piece.

Strange to think that Vikings were the very first to make a lock, considering they would come a pillaging! Contact the Yorvick centre, York, in The UK because they have an early Viking lock.

Very interesting. My lesson for the day. I would have said it is either a point switch lock or a track lock. Thanks for sharing.
