Signature quilts were used as a means of fund-raising by the Red Cross in the early 1900's to support the war effort. They established the tradition of incorporating the values of volunteer work and community, bravery and care of the injured and sick. Folks would donate a small amount and in return their names would get stitched into the quilts. The first quilt was signed by President Woodrow Wilson and his wife, Theodore Roosevelt, Helen Keller and Sarah Bernhardt amongst others.
This particular signature quilt was labeled 'The Dorcus S.S. Class', '1917', and there were many other notes around the sides. If you really want to know what they say you'll have to track down this unique piece from the happy buyer when it resurfaces on the market!
