This information came from "The OFFICAL CATALOG of the WORKS of SALVADOR DALI". Courtesy of the Salvador Dali Museum.

Although this work is not original, it is authentic, and collectors may wish to have it as an example of work by Dali.
The information came from interviews with Luigi Toninelli, who also supplied documents. There is no reason to doubt his statements.
The print is based on original drawing which Mr Toninelli's Father had obtained from Paul Eluard. The title is thought to be from a poem of Eluard.
The drawing is 7.2" x 5.6" on paper 11.8" x 9.11". The master lithographer Gino Diomaiuto in Paris created a larger image in stone and the printed lithograph is 14" x 11" on paper 22" x 14-1/8". Mr Toninelli took a trial proof to Dali at the hotel Meurice in Paris. Dali looked at it and told him that it needed color.
Mr. Toninelli added color to a second proof and showed it to Dali, who told him the color was too weak.
He revised the color on the third proof, with which Dali was satisfied. No payment was requested or paid.
Mr. Toninelli bought 200 sheets of pre signed Arches paper, and in 1979 had an edition printed by Jobin-Grapholith, 60 av. General Le Clerc:
    • 90 marked in Roman numerals
    • 90 marked in Arabic numerals
    • 15 or so marked E.A.

The print has a unique status:
AUTHORIZATION. Dali examined trial proofs and ask for changes.

INTENT. The drawing was not intended to be made into an edition. It is an "after".

PARTICIPATION. Dali accepted the third trial proof.

SIGNATURE. Mr. Toninelli was told where to get pre-signed paper.

    Edition: 42/90
