This lamp came from Mulga Coal Company in Bessemer, Alabama in the mid 80's, its made by KOEHLER and when the mine closed down in 1984 this lamp followed someone home.

These are called "Mine Safety Lamp". They were not used for light, they were fueled by Naptha and were kept at various sites in the mine where people were working as a safety measure, like the canary in the old days, if this light went out then the workers knew to get out because oxygen levels were too low. They were still used by the Navy in the 1960's when men needed to go into areas that had been sealed off or contaminated.

i have recently seen a permissable safety light an was wondering about the age an worth,,,an how to operate it,,,
i finally found the exact same light on a web page an it is worth around 75$ thanks for all the info,,,
I have a permissible safety lamp #203 by Koehler Mfg. Co. and I am trying to find someplace where I might be able to get the entire striker mechanism. If there is anyone who could help me I would appreciate it very much. I actually had it going then the coil type spring in the mechanism broke.
I have two of these unused mint condition. I bought them in Alabama and was told they came from a ship in the 1950's and were never used. I paid $40.00 for the pair
This lamp runs on CARBIDE, and not anything else. I own one of these, a #209.
I retract my previous statement. I am unsure of how the lamp is powered.
