This is an Asian statue that stands approx. 18". It is carved in Teak wood, very heavy. I can't explain the red hue to the wood- possible lacquer?

Hello! My father was stationed in Taiwan in the late 60's. During their time there, my parents picked up many items. My mother had one that looked very similar to yours. I was wondering, is there is a small hole at the top, where his hands come together? If so, I believe you have a fisherman. My mother's had a removable bamboo fishing pole with a teak wood fish on the end of the line. He also had a flat teak wood hat, with a hole in the center, that fit down over his top knot. Her statue had the same red hue.

There is no hole in his hands. However, I do have another Teak wood statue with the fish carved in it. Thanks for your response
