When the war with Japan ended (VJ Day), my grandfather was in the Mediterranean on a ship. Shortly after, he sailed home and docked in New York and was home for good. There was fanfare when he landed, but not nearly the celebration there was on VJ Day. He jokingly claims that famous picture of the sailor kissing his girlfriend in Times Square is him and my grandmother.
