This is another basket I found at the same estate sale. Can anyone help me to identify it? Thanks!

This isn't Native American, it was made in Pakistan. It's made from a type of palm fiber, and has that distinctive herringbone stitch rim finish that is found on most baskets like this.

They are made to deceive. Patterns are based on actual American Indian designs, and they are sold throughout the Southwest in gift shops, trading posts, and "tourist traps," with the hope that buyers will think they are authentic Indian baskets. The material is wrong, however, as is the weaving technique. They have the "look" but not good enough to fool anyone who is familiar with the real thing.

They arrive in this country with paper labels saying "Made in Pakistan," but those often are "lost." You will often, however, see a black felt pen mark on the bottom, saying "PAK." Whether that is original, or added by someone here, I haven't been able to determine. But they show up on eBay all the time, in lots of different design patterns and color combinations. There are also several web sites that sell them:

I'm disappointed that it isn't Native American but I appreciate all the information. Thank you so much!
