My father was given this stein in the early 1920's by a German friend.I was told it was a Thewalt Stoneware Stein. On the Stein is Loreley -Felsen. She is sitting on the rocks. There is German written on it and Rheinstein in the navy sky. On the underside Germany is stamped into the bottom. It has a # 952 by the handle and on the bottom. There also a # 10.I would like to know more about this stein and it's worth.
Actually this is a Mathias Girmscheid stein. The text is: “Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen Am Ende Schiffer und Kahn; Und das hat mit ihrem Singen Die Loreley getan.” (I think the waves will in the end devour the sailor and his ship;
and that was done by the Loreley with her song.) The Loreley is a mythical nymph who is said to have once sat on a summit above the Rhine river singing songs and tempting boatmen to potential disaster on the rocks below with her haunting music and stunning beauty. Text is the final stanza from the poem “Loreleylied” (Loreley Song), written by Heinrich Heine in 1823 and set to music in 1838 by Friedrich Silcher.
In mint condition, the price range is $100 to $150. On eBay it would be in the lower range and in a stein auction catalog it would be in the higher range.
