I received this item from a Greek man, which wife was Greek-Russian. He said it might be a wedding present.

I would like to know if anybody can tell me if this was a tradition then in Russia and any help you can give me to estimate its value. It is also strange that one name is Russian and on the other side (not on the picture) is German. Also does anybody know how to clean bone?

    Thank you mystery solvers!

      Wonderful box!!!
The carving is so finely detailed and shiny that I'm pretty sure it is ivory rather than bone :-)
A lightly damped soapy soft tooth brush rub, then a clear water damp cloth to remove the soapy cleaning and that's all.

For the value, Russian items are very valuable, it is worth submitting it to a high end auctioneer, Bonhams, Christie's... (most give free valuation on their site from pics), maybe get too a translation of the writings on pic 1, those on pic 2 and 3 beeing signatures.
Please, tell us what come out :-)

"It is also strange that one name is Russian and on the other side (not on the picture) is German."

Not really odd if you consider the Russian Revolution was 1917, many of the wealthy fled.

Fantastic to get the translation, the box seems to be grief related...

Thank you, I recently got an appraisal and it was good but I don't know how good. They told me it didn't achieve the amount proper for their auction house so I don't know what to do

Keep it its beautiful. Probably will only go up in value.

Update: I took it to an antique dealer, she said it is very very interesting and also that it was ivory and a snuff box, instead of cigarette box :) who would have known! But now I have much bigger clues about it :)
