The tool is 44 '' tall, the handle is about 1 inch in diameter, the blade is
4 1/2'' wide and the bottom of the blade has been sharpened. The blade is held in place with two small nails. With the ball at the top of the handle and the blade a the bottom I suspect it was used for scraping. The blade is spiraled which would help the scraped material to separate from its surface.
    Whale blubber?

When I originally acquired it I was told it was a whaling spade. I have contacted a couple of whaling museum who were not able to identify the tool.
