This photo depicts the late Arlene Bailey, award winning jewelry designer and goldsmith, with her horse (Goldie) and dog (Dog) on one of their cross country trips. This photo is taken somewhere in Fredericksburg, Virginia while Arlene was resting the animals. Arlene camped in the fields, woods, and adjacent to streams. One account, from her diary, recalls the beautiful grassy fields where Arlene permitted her horse, Good as Gold to open up at full speed. Arlene even slept on the porches of abandoned farm houses. Dog's relationship with Arlene is rather interesting. According to Arlene, Dog was one of several wild dogs that participated in an attack on Arlene and he horse. Dog adopted Arlene after Arlene and Goldie encountered the group a second time. Someday, maybe Arlene’s diary and memoirs will be published. The photo is property of Franz Joseph Bailey, All Rights Reserved.

@ Inky - This is quite an interesting story. Dog sat out the second “round” when Arlene and Goldie encountered the group. Arlene had observed the group and charged them in an attempt to injure as many of them as possible. At some point, Dog followed Arlene home and she called him Dog because he was always free to leave her. It is said that Dog was the smartest and most obedient animal Arlene ever encountered. During one of Arlene’s trips, she encountered a gentleman who worked Dog with nothing more than hand signals and noises. It was at that time Arlene thought they would part ways. In his faithfulness, Dog stayed with Arlene until he died.
Thanks for the love Inky, Vetraio50 and Radegunder!
