Really like this piece, its quite well done, so much so that my hunch is that it made by a well-known studio artist.

I can't tell if its an image of something or just modernist expressionism. If the latter, then it really impresses me. Its quite creative. I see Goofy eating a mahi-mahi.

At first I glance I think it was Asian, that stamp sort of looks that way, could be a kiln mark. I guess this was #27 out of an edition of 30. The Japanese do use Arabic numerals, so it still could be Japanese, which is my current theory.

Guess all I have to go on is that other mark at the top. Maybe its an "R" Hopefully one day I'll stumble across it. Thanks for looking : )

I've got a piece with a similar artist signature starts with R and the rest is a muddle, just posted a day ago. Why oh why can't they sign legibly? ;)

I have been asking that EXACT SAME QUESTION since I started collecting art and pottery years ago, what is the deal??? Why can't ANY ARTIST AT ALL sign their pieces so people can READ THEM?? Ughhh... Sorry to vent on you Katherine. Its just that I've seen the most WILD signatures that could be read by no human being on earth. I don't get it. 95% of the art/pottery I come across is completely illegible.

It really is annoying. Looks like they used a stick to scrawl their names into the wet clay before it went into the kiln. I looked at katherine's pottery until I was cross-eyed and still have no clue what the name is supposed to be. The ash didn't even help. Maybe press some Silly Putty into the "name" and look at it in the mirror? LOL

Trust me I've seen far, far worse. I use flour personally to rub against signatures. You could try that.

Now If I were an artist, I would want people to be able to read my signature and RECOGNIZE my pieces so that I could create a following and heighten my profile, become well-known. I just don't get it at all!! And it's been a *HUGE* peeve of mine for a decade, since I like studio art pottery so much. I want to be able to read their names!!!!

Sorry again for the vent everyone. I just love good studio pottery, and for the last decade, every single piece I pick up with scribbles on the bottom makes that peeve bigger.

There's no hope with this particular piece, it's just symbols. I would have to run across it randomly one day. I just thought that the workmanship, design, and marks could possibly mean that it could be important (and it was cheap ).

i think i am the WORST at deciphering the signatures of others [and my writing is pretty difficult to decipher as well]. it is very frustrating though. this piece is beautiful - the combination of movement, spontaneity, delicate line is really very nice.

Thought I would post and let people know that only the first link helps with IDs, the second link is the original group from which the second group derives.
