I love the way the edges look like twisted cord. It looks like maybe it's a stone of some sort. I know it is old, as my grandma wore this often.
There are no obvious markings as to who the jewller may be. Any help is appreciated. Thank you, Nanam

Hi, your beautiful brooch is not costume jewelry!
Can't see from pic if it is yellow or white, so either gold or silver :-)
Victorian era, you may check here to see the tube hinge and C clasp:
      http://www.fancy4glass.ca/information-gallery-main-pages/identifying-and-dating-an-antique-or-vintage-jewelry-clasp-or-hinge.htm
The stone may be a kind of Conemara marble or Scottish stone, very popular then.

Thank you Kyratango! It looks like white (ish) stone. Perhaps just a bit dirty, oops.
The outside tubing looks a bit like copper?! My grandmother did have jewelry from Scotland, and I have ancestors there too.

is there a signature by the C clasp?
had a similar brooch with the rope design around and a large but different stone.
it also had a C clasp...
mine had a gold-tone... it ended up being 10k gold.
