I am curious if anybody knows how to tell a real Stradivarius from a fake? I have done a lot of research and this one measures up and the label is correct but they say there were thousands of replicas made. Is there any real way to know if this is possibly a real 1693 Stradivarius Violin? Any advice is appreciated.....

If I thought I had a Strad, I'd be furiously researching where in my local area I could take it to be checked out, if not a museum, or the local symphony, maybe an antiquities expert. Good luck!

Seems that I read or heard that all the originals were accounted for.

I bought an old violin once -- as it had the Strat label in it too. Looked good, measured right -- and after lots of research there was something that was incorrect with the label ( I found). Not sure where I found that info, but will see if I can find anything.

~ I kinda figured it was not a real old Stat as I bought it at a Garage ( not busy one) for only $ 10 -- but HEY -- You never know. For $ 10 bucks I figured I will check it out.

~ Can you get a better pic of the label inside??

blunderbuss, that's correct, they are all accounted for. :)

Yeah I heard they're all accounted for too -- but wanted a better pic of the label to see if that is where the error is -- so others will know too. I imagine there will always be others posted, so best learn how to tell.

~ Cw is about about learning too.........real or not

Actually "all accounted for" is incorrect for the 1693. There are actually only two that the whereabouts are certain. As a matter of fact in the life span of Antonius Stradivari there were around a thousand instruments produced by himself and crew. Of those 1000 or so only 500ish are accounted for. They "assume" the rest were destroyed or forever lost however early on in his career (pre 1700's) he did not have a very good system for tracking and it is totally possible some are floating around. The odds of this being one of them is slim to none however every month "somebody" wins the powerball with greater odds than this being a Strad.:) Im simply looking for any specific labeling issues to look for that anybody knows because everything ive seen and read points to this being either a perfect copy or.......Thanks for all the input...I really appreciate it....

Well like I said, if I thought I had a Strad, I sure would track down a local authority and take it to them to look at. Good luck!
