Heres our U Boat Clock... bit different from many of the others out there as this has no right hand face N/O reference numbers, the N/O generalyl for North or South Atlantic designation.

I've read around the subject and found from one web site that clocks without the reference are rare, and were used by head office, for want of better words.

The provenance of the clock is: we picked it up in a watchmakers near the black sea, it was given by a german to a partisan as a trade for food and free passage during the retreat.

Amazingly it had the original key with it... needed a bit of work to the mechanism mind you as it hadnt been touched since the war... so the clock spent four months at a watch maker here in London.. and now it works like new, ticking away nicely on an 8 day movement... there was, so I was told a pivot screw needing attention...

Its a very heavy clock.. I don't think my walls at home will take the weight... tick is nice and the air tight cover still functions.

These were painted black but theres only traces of that now...

We are thinking about restoring it, but somehow I don't really feel this needs to be museum quality.. I like it just how it is...

That's a great clock. Roughly how big is it?
I like the age on it too....I would leave it as is.

Hi race4four... the clock measures (at base about 68cms), theres three securing lugs as well, which adds about 2cms... depth is about 10cms... so pretty big... we're going to leave it as it is... its so cool.. I found one on a website here in the UK..

For what it may be worth, I agree with racer4four, I would leave the clock's finish as is. Maybe apply a good wax to it is all that I would do. Thanks for sharing!

      Hi
I like your clock but are you sure that there is no serials in movement backplate?
Never heard Germany clocks without serials except very old ones. Can you take photo from movement, it is GB or Junghans made?

      Hi
Didn't find your post, yet. Why they(Germans) use these clocks in headquarters? I believe that in headquarters wall is wall clock no submarine clock.
If serial is not backplate then it is frontplate.
There is lot interesting story's with items. But some these story's are salesman's sales pitch. Never heard also that partisans let Germans retreat peacefully and give food from clock. :)
No offense but great clock and even greater story.

      Hi

Thanks Joe, got this from a regular source etc... so pretty much on the ball with the background info.

My view on the difference in clocks... well I cant say more than appears on that link, I found though a site in the USA that confirms they are super rare.

Be one for me to hang on to... it keeps amazing time.

Hi, I was wondering if it was possible i can use this artifact for the base of my college research paper? If so i would just ask to interview you about how you acquired this piece, what it looks like, and any background information you have - in hopes of being able to find out more information about it like perhaps where it originated from :)
