This 1880's case gin was dug from a swamp dump near the city of Savannah. I dug a number of different types there. You can see that the bottoms of the bottles are different.

Would find a lot of these (mostly broken) when I lived it St. Eustatius (Statia), Netherlands Antilles. The 1's we found, surely went back further than that! Statia never recovered after Admiral Rodney invaded in 1781.
I have dug them here from the early 1700's all of them broken. People in the old days just did not throw away good bottles. They would reuse them over and over until they were broken.
Point taken. The marooned sailors couldn't even get bottles to build ships in until they were chipped around the mouth & couldn't be re-used anymore. Ck out my poste on the ship in a bottle. (not modern shit!).
Holland Gin was probably the most traded item throughout the world. I have found hundreds here in Canada. The ones with this type of under-base and in black glass were probably the earliest ones I have seen. RER(BOB)
So, Lou, you think theses are earlier, eh? (sorry, just habit). The bottles/pieces, were very early that we found in Statia.
blunderbuss2! I said that they "were probably the earliest ones that I have seen". We sometimes come across "black" wine bottles from France that would be earlier than the Gin bottles. BOB
