I've just finished my research on this compact. It was sold has an Austro-Hungarian silver compact. I cleaned up the marks and then I looked for Austro-Hungarian marks nothing, then the Austrian marks, than I looked for Hungarian marks nothing. I started looking through the Eastern European countries nothing. Then I looked into the Italian marks nothing, finally I looked in to the French silver markings, were I found the makers mark Henin & Cie.
In my opinion I think it is probably Art Deco, if anybody has any other ideas please let me know. The compact as a jigsaw look to it, from the sides its looks as if it has four tiers. The stones were suppose to be Garnets but tested for Rubies, so I'm presuming the gold coloured metal is gold. It's a hefty weight of 175 grams, unfortunately there is some damaged to the back which looks like a stain or acid Mark, which has removed some of the pattern and it looks like somebody has tried to scratch the pattern back, but has you can see not very well. I wonder is there is anything I can do to polish out the stain.
    Many thanks for looking.

The other mark is likely for silver content. It looks like the Minerva touchmark for .950 silver

Good grief - I've gone blind trying to make sense of the Minerva mark, my puny magnifying glass just doesn't cut it.
Anyway, it is a lovely, lovely compact. It's a special piece, but the rubies ramp it up for me - very unexpected.
themuse-Am I correct that if I look to the right of the makers mark, the Minerva mark is facing upwards?
In the last picture I don't see the 05 at all.
jean I applaud your sleuthing, and again, it is a lovely object. Can't help with the stain, maybe Kyra can help.

      You got another beautiful compact!
Good search for the maker :-)
Themuse is right for Minera head, in octogonale for first title silver, in use from 1838 to 1973.
The stain is bothering, it seems deep... You may try windex with a paint brush, then rinse then simichrome with a Qtip rub only on the stain then a silver polish on the whole face.
Keep us informed of the result, I cross fingers for you ;-)

Beautiful compact :)...A clean pencil eraser took the remaining white stains off my very tarnished silver sugar spoon when nothing else would. Kind of amazing how it worked . It is mildly abrasive so be gentle, but it worked like a charm.

Hi kyra and mikelv, I tried both your remedies alas no results the mark is still there. I think it is a deep acid Mark, so I'm going to have to live with it, thanks to you both for your suggestions :-)

Really nice makes me think I should start wearing make up.
    15. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 8 years ago
Lol, maybe you should, Caperkid. Unfortunately there is no powder in this compact. So this wouldn't be a good start for you. Thanks for passing by and leaving your nice comment.
