Hi Susie, beautiful Kokeshi! I can see why you would think it was a Yamagata Kokeshi due to the rounded shoulders. However it is a Togatta Kokeshi at first I thought it to be Hijiori and then looking at the facial features and hair I thought let me check Togatta, I browsed quickly through some pictures and found that beautiful face. After comparing the signature to one in my signature album I confirmed it to be Shoji Onuma who was born in 1932 and studied under Jiro Sato. He is a Togatta artisan per the book "An invitation to Kokeshi Dolls". Regards -Soul

THANK YOU SO MUCH...Soulportals...I love this kokeshi and had a feeling you would know what type is was...A little confusing with different bits but had not thought Togatta at all!!!...Many many thanks...Cheers

Your very welcome! I still get confused with some of them, mostly the Nanbu, Hanamaki and Kina Kina ones since they are not very well defined and are kind of all grouped together. Just recently they are staring up a new Kokeshi type hoping to make it an additional traditional strain called Ishinomaki as if there weren't enough to remember already! I'll have to post a picture so you can see them in case you haven't already :) -Soul

Ishinomaki...???...From where is this new one coming...Would love to see pic...
I get confused with many I have as they seem to be mixtures so never sure what to call them...It seems Shoji Onuma is an important artisan...???
Thanks again for your always spot on advice...Cheers

I totally forgot to post to your comment, my apologies! I have uploaded Ishinomaki Kokeshi picture. http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/177065-ishinomaki-Kokeshi they come form Sendai. Shoji Onuma I would say like every artisan has their own unique trademark. He does the beautiful cherry blossoms with the tree branch design that has been quite popular with collectors. The design has been adapted by many artisans, who now incorporate it into their Kokeshi designs.
