Regardless, i think that this is a beautiful piece. it reminds me of majolica. Sorry the shot of the bottom is so poor. i'll try to get a better pic if people think it would be helpful. not sure if the staining on the bottom is the kiss of death - the brown stain i'm always warning people about. it says 'Made in China in the diamond and i can't make out the other words and marks.

i heard back on a FB site that this is an early 20th century piece of Shiwan ware - and a very good one too. i'm happy!

thank you katherine. it's generated quite a bit of interest on the chinese antiques fb site.
according to an expert in Chinese art, this piece was a scholar's object. the name of the scholar is written on the bottom.
Chinese works of art are highly valued right now, as I understand it. :)
whereas the internet has meant the reduction of value for so many antiques throughout the world, Chinese antiques and works of art/craft values have continued to creep upwards as people have continue to increase their expendable income in China.
