    MyFavorite…
    (39 items)

Carved, wooden vase - approximately 12"; I can't put a precise date on this, but it's another family item that I've had since the 1970's so I'd have to say it goes 10-15 years prior to that. It is actually a little darker in color than what it appears in these photos. What I'd like to know on this is, a) what type of wood is this?, and b) would this type carving be specific to a certain country or native people? I know it came from outside of the United States, I just don't know from where. I don't have exact weight, but it is a little on the heavy side. Thanks for any suggestions! (for lack of knowing where exactly to categorize this, I put in Folk Art - should it be elsewhere?)

My father could do a bit of it, but like all his work he had no classes but did buy a good professional lathe at one point in his life. Beautiful piece of treen. Hope you can find some bowls _ I particularly love to see treen bowls. Just holding one lets the viewer know it is special.

Wow, bladerunner22, that's awesome! Were you able to keep any of your father's work? How special it would be to have something crafted by your dad!
Thank you for your kind words, I certainly appreciate it!

Thank you, MelanieJ; these pics really don't do it proper justice -- it really is beautiful wood.

No It was mostly because he made full back yard furniture with benches and huge wood chairs, but not really my sort of thing. He was able to fix things like rockers and make spindly kind of legs. Got him to help me using his lathe drill for some work. He was handy at fixing things like clocks, toys which he made also. Sometimes at a larger local craft show you could ask who might make treen and show there, that might be handy. What I saw when I saw 2 treen workers at one large show was very special. I remember the bowls and what a piece of art they were. All so precious.

Bladerunner22, such a blessing to have family with creative talent!! I have a friend not too many miles away from where I am that has a very nice wood shop and business; makes furniture and also turns wood into beautiful pieces of art. I may just have to take my two pieces to him some day soon and let him have a look.

I'm glad I stopped to look at your vase. Very beautiful and talented workmanship. Almost looks like Black Walnut wood. That is a special piece and history makes it even more special.

I take it back!!! That is mahogany.

Thank you oktreedude, I appreciate your compliments and comments -- my father worked overseas most his life - Venezuela, Bolivia, many, many different countries; he brought back so many wonderful carved pieces - unfortunately, we didn't label them when we had the opportunity. But you are the second person to tell me it's mahogany!

      And thanks Aura, appreciate it!
