This piece has been in the family forever. It is General Custer and is made of some base metal. The base is signed "Metropolitan Mfg. Co. New York. The piece dates from around 1900.

The piece is black in color.
I have a black metal cast horse with the exact same "Metropolitan Mfg" signature. Does anyone have any more info on the maker? And when they were made?
Wow, I have one of these, probably not in as good a condition as yours (no reins) and the horseman is loose. If I may ask, how do you know its Gen. Custer? I was thinking it was a 16th century cavalier or something to do with the 3 musketeers.
Well someone told me. Read ar8Jason above. He found the same piece at an Auction being called Custer.
Found out this made as a figure that was placed on top of a clock. I found a number of these and no one had the same identification of the rider. So that is a mystery. But we know what its original use was. Before finding this info today, I was told by a friend that it was a clock top stature. It is "spelter" which is nothing more a mixture of different metals.
