Nice one! If there is a grate in it, or it can be seen that a grate WAS there, then it indeed be for coal. Wood fires don't need grates as air is drawn from the sides of a fire.
On the other-hand, if it was coal, air, with its natural fuel of oxygen, needs to pass from under the fires bed of heated coals to get decent heat.

Sorry, I could tell you what it might be worth in Canada.
In New Zealand, I'd imagine you might get something between NZ$800 & $1500 if someone in a big city & is a full time employed individual who wants or is looking to restore an old house with a bit of character. I'M SURE THAT THIS WOULD FIT THE BILL for him or her.
These days with all this clean air stuff being bandied around, I imagine it could quite well make it a less desirable "appliance" BUT......, for a collector or someone who likes good old fashioned, really solid bits of history, which is likely to be able to be used and admired for generations to come, they might see it having a very different value.
Its SO ornate, beautiful!
I'd love to see it installed so I hope you will consider posting it again on here, when you have it inside your abode.
Good on you for saving it from the scrap heap & possibly melted down by the Chinese to make a useless bit of cr.. which will then end up being added to one of the worlds ever increasing number of rubbish dumps.

Hey just a thought (again) If the front section can be removed, it might be able to burn wood effectively as well as coal. If a fire can be seen, then even if the heat isn't so flash, the warmth of the sight of the flickering flames could still be worth the less amount of actual heat.
If someone complains, go grab the axe and tell him/her to go chop some more wood. The swingin' of the axe will heat'em up. :-)
