I found six of these chairs at a garage sale. The six of them were so stunning standing there. Not too mention very sturdy. The internet helped me figure out they are referred to as hip huggers. I'm assuming they are dining room table chairs. I have not figured out what type of wood they are but have a lead on someone that can help me with that. I don't see a makers name on the bottom. Can any one help me with other key characteristics that would help me get an approximate age on these, and if it's common to see them with the backs and seats both caned? I have not really seen any on the internet that have both the seat and back caned. Just trying to ascertain what I fell in love with. Are they considered Victorian or what? Thanks for any and all thoughts! Lesle

What you have is a set of what my Father calls hip rest chairs. East lake style, late 1800s, probably made in Grand Rapids, Michigan; it was called the furniture capital of the world because there were so many furniture factories. Dad has a single chair that has a cane bottom and back. It was my mother's chair. I've been to a lot of auctions and have never seen a pair let alone a set of 6. You have a rare find. I hope this has helped and wish you luck finding out more about the chairs.
