The part that looks like a lifesaver does indeed have a hole in the center. No defining markings or anything. Found it at a small antique store in Bluffton, SC. Thought it looked interesting and had no idea what it was for so I bought it.

Thanks, I haven't found this particular one but others that are very close. I'm guessing then 1940's or thereabouts.

Wow, mdbrown, did you ever find out more about this piece? I have 2 of them exactly like this...best guess I ever received was maybe part of a condiment server. But the fluorescent light end cap idea looks good! Never thought I'd ever see another one...I googled high and low.
