The bub being a Rhinoceros Beetle which is rather large. A dollar bill is included to show scale.
Just got the can of Black Flag today as I thought it would go well with the bug and bug sprayer. As can be seen it was from the days when DDT was allowed perhaps 1950s or 1960s. I am thinking 50s as in the 1960s aerosol cans were common.
The way this would be used was to pour the can over the beetle and then beat it with the sprayer.

      Damn that's a big bug.
You would probably need that. Whole can to kill it.

Great post, that woke up 2 memories for me, of the 50's-60's era! I was raised, and lived in Trailers, until I was about 14. Each and Every night at bed time, (usually in the summer), Dad would break out the Hudson Sprayer, filler up with black flag, start from the rear of our 50 ft. trailer, and spray, until it looked like a dense fog, for the Mosquito's! Now the big fat bug reminds me of all the huge, and very strange looking bugs I encountered in Vietnam! PS: I own a new in the box Hudson Sprayer from the 60's. just like yours, that I found at an estate sale, and had to have it. FSN-3740-691-1776, on the box.

Thank you very much Gruff. I live in the mountains of So Cal. The bug is from Southeast Asia.

      Cool post Fort.

Frisco - we lived in country NSW and had mosquitoes big enough to carry you away. Dad did the same every night in our bedrooms, but with Mortein.
I blame that for all the weirdos in our family now.
