Well it's half price Wednesday at Salvation again and here's today's prize. This had been hanging around in the showcase all week. So I played the waiting game and it almost backfired. I walked in and it wasn't there. I scanned the whole case...gone. I was about to leave and there it was as if by magic on the top shelf. What the ....?? Under the new management only they can open the case not the cashiers. So it must have been put back while I was walking around. Nice heavy what I assume is black marble or composite with a spelter cold painted equestrian figure mounted to it. Some paint loss here and there. On the horse's flanks and the rider's clothes and such but not too bad. All the delicate parts are intact. The dog's tail. the reins, and horse's legs. I really can't find one like it online. I thought for sure it would pop right up. Doesn't look like it ever met with a cigarette butt so I'm thinking a pipe rest or even a tip or desk tray. The bottom has green felt on it with that petrified glue so if there's a mark it would take a bit of effort to remove it. While I was standing in the checkout line I was asked if I wanted to sell it even before I paid for it. So maybe it is something really good ! -Mike-

It does look like 1930s Do a bit more research on hunting outfits in those days and see if you can find headgear shaped like the one the rider is wearing.

Thanks Bonnie :)....the base seems to be the key too. I did finally pull off the felt looking for an Austria mark. Enough felt is still stuck there that it obscures the bottom. However the tiny hex nuts that hold the figure do look like those Austrian examples. I also found this isn't marble but some kind of poured composite as there are air bubbles in the bottom. Could be bakelite or just about anything available at that time period.

Something similar on Ruby Lane :

      Your good year continues.
Now to find a smoking jacket, tasseled slippers, and a valet. Even you might have trouble with that last one Mike.

I think I'd call it maybe a trinket tray. Men would have them on their bureaus to put their pocket contents in at the end of the day. At least my dad did!

      Coin tray?
    12. antiquerose antiquerose, 8 years ago
? Could be coin Tray // Pipe holder // Trinket Tray // Ashtray ....or even a Cuff link holder ( aka Men's Dresser Tray ). My Dad had things like this on the dresser to hold his Tie pins, cuff links etc. Could cross-over to several different uses than what it may have been originally made for....Just a thought!!

~ Yours IS a Great piece!!

Thanks Celiene and Rose.....my thoughts exactly. Anything but an ash tray. No heat damage or evidence of that. I figured it was a pretty good piece Rose especially when I couldn't find another one like it ! :)

Thanks Kyra....it's at the co-op now but so far no takers. Probably time to bring it back home and just hang on to it. :)
