looking for information on a trunk that was found in my parent's barn in Nova Scotia. It has leather straps and handles, is paper lined inside and out and has the date Nov. 8 1864 stamped on the front. Everything on the trunk is pretty worn as it has probably been in that barn on the coast for 100 years. I have seen other posts about trunks almost identical to this one that say it indeed was made in the 1800s in Baltimore. A few things I would like to find out about the trunk:
If it was made in Baltimore, were they only sold there or distributed in other regions such as Nova Scotia?
Was it actually made in 1864?
Who was the maker?
I don't think I will restore/refinish the trunk. I really enjoy the piece as is and think it adds character to the room!
Great example of civil war era paper covered trunk. Normally most of the paper on these old beauties are long gone so wonderful that most of yours is intact. The 1864 date would fit in with the period these were made... as well as many years after this date. Very rare to see the paper dated on the front like this one. Manufacturers made different versions of trunks for different prices and the paper covered trunk was a cheaper model compared to a leather covered counterpart. These were manufactured in many states and sold all over North America and also sold in Europe -- only to return with people immigrating here. This is a lovely trunk -- thanks for the post!
