US. Made at JM Litchfield& co.san Francisco Cin. E pluribus unum on blade not sharp I received this sword over 30 years ago just wondering what year is it who was it issued to and more if possible thank you

Made in CA makes it post Civil War. The hand guard wasn't a perfect "D" shape but this appears to have been bent in quite a bit toward the blade. (No room for the index finger). Other that the rare use of a cavalry sabre during the C.W., swords were basically a symbol of rank & something to trip-up the wearer.
Possibly Spanish American war. It is very close but not a perfect match. May not be US Army issue.
M1872 Mounted Artillery Officer's Sword.
The guard has an extra bend to (over bend) as mentioned by buss.
The sharkskin grip was used on this model-- usual they are found on USN swords.
These flimsy swords served little use as weapons-- some officer chose to continue to use CW era weapons.
