    Carved Cowrie Shell - memento from Hawaii! it's nicely done and has some age to it - probably 40s-60s? hard to tell. i hope they aren't massacring cowries for this kind of thing anymore.

      VERY nicely done I bet that took some time and no doubt real skill, Likely back then they could find shells washed up on shore all the time.
      Makes me want to try carving a shell (have a few layin around) I'm not sure if I still have it but before I was forced to retire (14 years ago YIKES) I could carve about anything in steel or aluminum but a shell would be a real challenge (for me anyhow)

      thank you valentino and PoliticalPinbacks! these cowries were almost always killed if the shell is super shiny like this one. when they die on their own and splash around for awhile, they lose this shininess. this is an older one from the 40s / 50s, i'm pretty certain.
