I got this Robertson Sign Company, Coca Cola sign about 2 weeks ago. Its 6 feet x 2 1/2 feet.
The peeling paint is a problem. Apparently some signs were painted on galvanized metal back in the day. That seems to be the case with this one.
I am looking for and hope to find a way to at least arrest the peeling process. The bottle image is in fantastic shape!
I don't want to end up with a piece of bare, flat metal!
    Any ideas??

      Shoot some clear on it.

I'm thinking that may be the thing to do Trey. Thanks buddy!

I would check with a conservator to see which kind to use as far as spray, you don't want it to peel or bubble the existing paint.

      Exactly Signaholic! "Primum non nocere!"
What is curious to me is that this sign was mounted outdoors at some point and is now more than 80 years old.
How has it done so well for so long and NOW is peeling away? IF the problem is oil based paint on galvanized metal. (The oil becomes a soap after reacting with the zinc it seems.)
I talked with a local (hour away) sign painter who thinks
it is and will shoot it with clearcoat. And.....if I wish (and I am pretty sure I do) sand off the galvanized, prime, and repair the damage.
I really like this sign and hate seeing it flake away!

I would get it framed as soon as possible also if it doesn't have structure already. The flexing metal probably doesn't help the paint situation. These style signs display very well. Nice find.

Thanks robeo! I have it mounted on a sturdy frame that I made for behind the sign. Its screwed to the sign through holes used to mount the sign way back when.
I welcome all thoughts and insights from the helpful people here. Thanks!

What was used to preserve it?
