I have been trying to identify this pattern on this basket tray. This would normally be considered a wedding basket/tray but I cannot find the origin. It seems to be Cherokee, but at this point, it could be from anywhere. It has been beautifully woven and appears to be made of natural materials. Because of the linear pattern I started by looking at the Salishan tribes of the Northwestern Coastline up into Columbia Canada and I even sent photos to the Cowlitz Tribe asking for help. They didn't recognize the pattern. Can anyone help me with this mystery? Thanks so much!

I can solve your mystery. This is African, not Native American Indian. It's a traditional style coiled palm fiber basket from Nigeria or neighboring Niger, made by the Hausa who inhabit the area.
If you want a reference, one is illustrated on the front cover of "Art of the Basket, Traditional Basketry from Around the World" by Bryan Sentance, and on many web sites. They were originally made as lids for storage baskets, but today are primarily made for export, for the decorator trade.
