I bought this gorgeous caftan at a Goodwill. I would not usually have bought such an expensive item, even secondhand, but it is the most beautiful garment I think I have ever seen. I might frame the caftan and put it on my wall as a piece of art. I've searched and searched Pinterest, google, different fashion collections, etc., and I can't find an Oscar de la Renta caftan that compares. If anyone has any information about who might know what this piece is (collection, year, etc.) I would greatly appreciate it!
A German house painter friend of mine could probably sell his work clothes for art ! LOL !!

Are we sure it's a caftan? The buttons only go down to the crotch area. You would have to wear something under it. Maybe it's an elaborate coat? It's stunning, and you should contact a fashion museum or the House of La Renta for info. I doubt it was mass produced!
well it was made in the USA , which is a very good sign!!

What is the material? Post a second post with pics of the inside - it looks to me like it opens in the front,but can't tell. The view from the back makes it look custom made to one body, but it say size 6! It also looks like the buttons are all different?

these were popular in the 1970/ early 1980 era IMHO....I had one, and they were COMFY. This one looks like it has some chenille on it like those old bedspread.

Where is the original poster? A drop & run?
Looking ta the tags I agree with the 1980s dating and note that this item is pret-a-porter not couture. That doesn't mean it is not genuine or beautifully made with great fabrics, just that it was part of a off-the-rack limited line and not an individually made piece.
I would love to see it and feel it. Designer clothed truly are so different to what we normally wear! Like Sean said maybe check with OdlR as they will have historical records.

Okay. I'll take additional pictures of the inside and get them posted. It does button just down to the naval, then is open. I have searched caftans, coats, ethnic gowns (I think Oscar de la Renta has middle Eastern and Asian lines and anything else I can think of. It is very textured with chenille embroidered in. On the inside of the piece you can see through the lining and see all of the threads--if it is pret-a-porter it definitely was a work intensive one. And if it is couture I'm sure it was a gem for whoever it was made for. It's really fun to have this mysterious and beautiful item. Thanks so much for getting in on the search for what it is! Melanie
Also, I emailed Oscar de la Renta and had a brief interaction with someone there. She said I would need to contact the corporate headquarters, but I haven't been able to find a different contact from what I thought I had contacted. I think she was more of a retail sales person.
Not sure if you've tried this already but there are a number of vintage clothing groups on FB, they may be able to provide help. This is a beautiful garment, good luck with it! :)

I get the 1970's flair too.................IMO, I do not think it is a coat or worn over anything except your underwear....LOL. Not a coat as we think the word coat means....but a coat like in Coat / Duster / Caftan thingy. See the links below

In a Caftan or Duster you used for lounging -- or could wear when entertaining company too. A lot of those Hollywood ladies wore them too for fancy entertaining. Just MO....see the link below as lots of good examples there at are Vintage..

I've had several comments from members there, although nothing conclusive. I said I would take pictures of the inside of the piece. I don't see a place to add more pics here, though?
I found it! Oscar de la Renta 2003 Fall Ready to Wear collection. I found it after scouring and scouring thousands of pictures. It was on vogue.com--they have several years of collections on their site. Thanks for everybody's help.

Yikes, people. I'm so sorry I haven't checked back for a while! I'm so grateful that people were interested in this piece, and I apologize for not following CW etiquette and posting the link. I honestly didn't know how interested people would be. SO, I've found the dress on both the vogue and elle websites. But it's the same thing--just a picture of the pieces in the collection but no description. I have searched and searched for information about the dress to no success. I'll stay caught up with my emails and the posts here in case people have more questions. I have recently posted the dress on ebay.

Do you still have it. Can you post more pictures? I'm an OdlR collector, so I remember this piece very well. Sadly, OdlR doesn't make the brocades and jacquards like before.
