I'd love any help to identify whether this item is a perfume bottle, snuff bottle or as I suspect, smelling salts? I'm struggling to identify the bottle material too. It feels like stone? Textured and with marble swirl, streaks, mottling. Also making it tricky to date. Any and all ideas would be very very gratefully received! Thanks in advance

      Oh, that's very pretty!
Blown glass or crystal, what are the mesurements?
How is the opening, is there another stopper inside?
I'd say salt or perfume bottle :-)
      Welcome to CW!

Beautiful! I think it's a perfume bottle, too.

      Same pouch, different bottles

Great Bonnie! My search for these words gave nothing :-/

Perfume lingers, smelling 'salts' are basically ammonia. PE-EW! It looks like the bottle at one time had a chain you could wear as a necklace? Maybe on a chatelaine? On a finger so you could sniff it as you walked in nasty Victorian streets?

Yep - it was for a chatelaine. I think the pouch is a later addition. Looks like what you might get at souvenir shops with a glass bottle like in the Ebay listing. I still can't tell what it's made of. Can you take a hot needle and touch it in an inconspicuous place and tell us if it smells?

Ooh yes well done! My search for the message proved fruitless too. Well done!

Kyratango - I'll grab the measuring tape and grab some stats for us. Be back to you ASAP!

And thanks for the warm welcome. Good to be here!

Ooh hot needle test. Intriguing. Will do. Leave it with me!

(Yes I spotted some with a chain intact too and did indeed double as necklace. Nice!)

Sorry, thanked the wrong person there. Should say thank you Efesgirl in fact for locating pouch

Gutta percha over glass? I see there is a jewel on top of the stopper.

Possibly enamel paint? Clearly it was dipped into the material. (At least to me it's clear! Maybe it''s not?) Maybe a resin on top of water and you swirl dip it? Can you see inside if there is a glass bottle as a base? I have the PERFECT L.E.D. flashlight that would work beautifully to see inside!

      Welcome, Belle! Thanks, kyra!

Well done Efesgirl - for me perfume not smelling salts. Smelling salts don't seem to go with the sentiment on the pouch.
The bottle is quite fancy - which to me anyway, doesn't go with pouch either.
      Very nice perfume bottle indeed.

Hmm needle test I failed at. Sorry. Well, either that or it was in fact a success and the conclusion is no smell? I was too nervous to leave a mark to try again. Gah. Sorry

Dipped glass interesting though. I've tried torch on my phone. It's very dark in there so really tough to get much there either but can confirm its reflective and looks a little pearlescent? Which might indeed tally I guess with glass container and the pearlescence/darkness is the coating its dipped in

Opening v dark. Black almost. Can't see a glass lip for example. Is as dark as the darkness of the metal stopper.

There is a stone in top yes. Or faceted glass?

      At widest its 4.5-5cm
      Tallest 6.5cm

With the dimensions, could be either for perfume or salts!
