I have inherited a limited edition (functioning model) of Hornby's Hogwarts Castle - never been run. The loco & gold-plated display rail (in its packet) are in its original Harry Potter presentation box with a white silky lining. The box & loco are in pristine condition. Information on the box:
R2301 (bar code 5 010963 423018). Gold plated edition.
The only paper information inside is:
Two standard nfo leaflets - 4/839B 0897 & 4/866 0597.
A warning leaflet about wear of gold plate on the valve gear if the loco is run. The number 4/974 is in the right hand lower corner.
Should there be an authenticity certificate, and is one required for validity if I wished to sell it?
Is the number 4/974 relevant to its value or just indicative of its position in the production run of this limited edition?
Hornby cannot help!! Can you?

I have no idea what you have here. I can find only one reference to Harry Potter train on e-Bay which is a Lionel Harry Potter Hogwarts Express Train Set - G-Gauge Ready-to-Run Trains Set. Over $400.00. I don't think this is what you are looking for. Your piece is designed by Hornby Limited, in Margate, U.K., and manufactured in China. Not knowing exactly what is in the box makes it difficult. I don't think you have to worry that this is a rare piece, and I don't think if would be worth very much. I don't know what you mean by Authenticity certificate. This train looks like a good collectible, but then what do I know from Professor Albus Dumbledore : Corgi Harry Potter Diecast Metal Collectables Hogwarts Express MIB
Hornby didn't even display any Harry Potter trains (or anything for that matter) on their web site. B00 Hornby.
